Here's what others say about the Healthy Eating Adventure . . .
"In just my first adventure I am sleeping better, have noticed skin changes(for the better), and lost ten pounds. I have experienced some great new foods and am happy to report I am cooking so much more. While I was not big on fast food or soda, I am not using pre-packaged foods anymore!" ~ Kim M. "I already ate almost this way. The HEA program helped me refine and pay more attention to the specifics of fat and sugar content of foods. I have lost five pounds! I love being with like-minded people which helped to stay on track. I am happy report that my blood work improved!" ~ Jean C. "I have arthritis in my joints and have noticed a great improvement and reduction in pain. I have learned to be more aware of what I am eating and reading labels. Over-all I feel much better and have more energy. I don't miss not using salt and sugar. The sugar I do crave now is fresh fruit. I am looking forward to continuing to practice what I have learned. It was a joy to be able to do this adventure with my daughter!" ~ Pat M. |

5th Annual MPMC 5 Mile Run/Walk
Run for Johnston Run May 9, 2015 www.timberhilltiming.com |
Runners had the perfect day for the MPMC 5 Miler on May 9th– just enough clouds to keep it cool, enough sun to highlight the beauty of the landscape. This year the annual “Run for Johnston Run” raised money toward constructing the streamside trail. Runners lined up on Karpers road looking out toward Tuscarora Ridge. Senator Eichelberger (on the left) was there to start the runners off. He noted that small towns as well as major cities across the state and country are taking a careful look at preserving their waterways, not only for the obvious goal of clean water, but also as places where people can reconnect with nature – walking, biking, fishing. A favorite location for his daily run is the riverside trail in Harrisburg.
In just 34 minutes and 47 seconds Rodney Small of Chambersburg (photo center) was crossing the finish line with impressive long smooth strides. Luke Cessna powered in 20 seconds later and Derek Plummer a minute after that, both looking strong enough to run another 5 miles. Running is a family affair for Lindsey Hollenshead (photo center) who was the 1st place female at 37:24; it wasn’t long before her mom Kristal Hollenshead crossed the finish line. A complete list of times and awards can be seen at www.timberhilltiming.com under “Results” Many thanks to all the runners, and to the volunteers who managed the race – from registration, to water stations and directing traffic. |

"Fed Up" Public Screening
|
Are you fed up with the SAD (standard America diet)? Do you ever get the sense that the majority of food that is readily available in our grocery stores may not actually be that good for us? Doesn't it seem like, despite all of our modern medicine and technology, people in our culture are getting sicker not healthier? It is a powerful story about big sugar, processed foods, and skewed government policy that perpetuates it all.
MACWell sponsored a community screening of this powerful film at Wilson College on April 10. Definitely a must see!! |
The Community Joined MACWell for our 5 -Year Celebration
Together we've been working for 5 years towards a goal of "supporting a Groundswell of community commitment to making the Mercersburg Area a place that inspires its population to live well."
Along with an inspiring Keynote presentation by Wenonah Hauter,
the evening provided an opportunity to thank all of our volunteers, sponsors and supporters. We looked at the projects and progress that have occurred and talk about "what's next". The event included brainstorming with Wenonah Hauter, book signing, MACWell progress presentation, Keynote speech by Wenonah Hauter and dinner with time to share our ideas for future projects.
Thank you to Mercersburg Academy for collaborating in hosting this evening at the Burgin Center.

MACWell Receives Funding to Hire First Employee
(L-R) Dr. Elizabeth George, President of MACWell, and committee members Eric Holtzman, Kelly Brown, and Theresa Gourley accept a grant for $20,000 from Barbara Constable, VP Community Relations at Summit Health. The presentation was made May 28, 2013 outside the Fendrick Library. The money is given to Mercersburg Area Council for Wellness to help hire a part time Grant and Project Manager.
“I think it’s exciting,” said Constable. “MACWell has laid the groundwork so nicely. It has become an umbrella organization that needs somebody at the top to keep people motivated – to coach and mentor the leads for each task force.”
Dr. George added, “The Grant and Project Manager will oversee and coordinate, not replace the volunteer nature of the organization.” After interviewing several incredibly qualified applicants, the MACWell Committee has successfully filled the position and are thrilled to begin this new part of the journey! Thank you to all the donors who have contributed to this initiative. (Photo by the Mercersburg Journal)

Community Healthy Eating Adventure Hosted by Penn State Mt. Alto
Healthy Eating Adventure Hosted by Penn State Mt. Alto
Dr. Liz George presented "Eating for the Health of It" on March 7th followed by a Delicious Heart Healthy Meal.
Over 100 people attended the lecture, 70 at dinner and at least 25 people signed up to do the 28-day adventure.
The participants shared their success stories at the graduation celebration; many reported more energy, weight loss, and better digestion. The group also shared about how great it was to meet other people on the same journey, learn about nutrition and experience how health can be made simple. Here are a couple examples . . .
“I learned about nutrition in medical school and I’ve known how to eat healthily all my life but I’ve never been able to do it until I did this community adventure. I’m convinced that it’s important to be supported by the community around you when you’re trying to make change. And that’s what this program provides. This is the best grass roots healthy eating program I’ve seen in my 30 years in medical practice. I’m going to work to be sure more doctors become familiar with this program”
~ Dr. Michael Gaudiose ~
“The best thing is, within two weeks of following the program my knees no longer hurt!”
~ Pam Gaudiose ~
One participant was being treated for Lyme’s disease. After starting the healthy eating, her symptoms got even better and her pain decreased significantly. Her blood work levels all improved as did her digestion and elimination. Thinking maybe it was just the medicine improving her symptoms, she reverted to her old eating habits but immediately felt her symptoms return.
Another participant went to her doctor, who had medical students with him during the visit. He was congratulating her on how well she was doing - her cholesterol and blood pressure were so low. After the visit, all of the medical students gather around to learn her secrets to great health!
